Back from Los Estados Unidos
Yo.
Been out around USA way for the last couple weeks, back now with a list of the highlights:
-Hotlantic City, NJ for the first two days hit some temperatures I only thought existed in ovens. So gross. We've cooked our planet, sweet work, team.
-Got some time in with the family, did some mean grilling. My slow cook style works well for beer drinking and story telling.
-Saw Lil Wayne, aka Tunechi, aka Weezey at PNC Arts Center. Oh man, totally mind blowing. Axel Rose of the rap game.
-Hit up the Hamptons like a proper yuppie, then destroyed the Hamptons (or did the Hamptons destroy me?) with hundreds of cheap beers and a few bike rides for good measure.
-Made an appearance at the Tripp-Hayes wedding, a truly fantastic event.
-Finally flew back to China, got off the plane all like, "yo, what the hell is this place?" for the first time in awhile.
Back in the states first week of October, looking forward to it.

New Bike
Went to Peeping Bom on Julu a few weeks back and put together the Ice Cream Paint Job seen above. Manny has since claimed the bike and can be seen cruising the French Concession hitting on any and every one while I'm in the states.
Took out the Frankenbike with my old man yesterday for 43 miles. Man, a late 80s steel frame is a much different that a mid 2000s carbon fiber. That sounds obvious, but 1-2 mph off of your cruising pace is really noticeable.

Fireworks, Beijing 2006 style
This was the first year that Beijingers were allowed to light off fireworks in the downtown area after a number of years of restrictions. They went completely apeshit. This is the view from my hotel room, note that some of the fireworks are shot from people's 20th floor windows. 安全第一!

Perfume Pagoda
When I took this photo I was all like "Dang this is the most unique thing and I happened to capture it just in the nick of time (pats own back)." Then at dinner the other guy in our boat had taken the exact same photo as me. Oh well.
Side note - at the time this guy (Chris, a German software writer) had been making a site that let you play virtual tag or something using gps and handhelds. Dude is either way rich or way bitter now that Four Square is boomin'.
Good Luck, Barge
Shanghai is at times referred to as "The Paris of the East" and if you live here long enough you might even start to believe that load of BS. Just flipping through some photos from our trip last year (on the fifth straight day of truly miserable weather here in "TPOTE") reminds me just how absurd that comparison is. Here we have a barge, attempting to enter the Seine that has run into some difficulties. However, to be on a barge attempting to enter the Seine, life really does not have that many difficulties - one would think.

Shanghai -> Shenzhen -> Beijing -> Shanghai
Did a round about tour of China's three leading cities this week. Some assorted highlights and lowlights:
Shenzhen:
-Factories, factories, factories, and guess what? More factories.
-Things are heating up on the Sigma front. I love working for myself.
-Saw my friends' new restaurant, Rapscallions. Really nice seeing the original SZ expat crew becoming involved in the city this way.
Beijing:
-In November 2009 I saw Pet Conspiracy in HK and quite literally freaked out at how good they were. Saw them last night and it sucked. More people on stage making videos than on stage playing music. Also, the loss of Helen Feng (former lead singer) is forcing back-up singers to try to be lead singers.
-Did some serious AS work also - again, I love working for myself.
-Ate roadside 串 for the first time in sooooo long. Ended up sitting at a table with some guys who work at the local gas station eating mutton and drinking 啤酒s.
-Told someone, "you are the kind of person who probably keeps a detailed blog but doesn't respond to emails for at least a week."
-Spent an hour and a half on Skype with a best friend back home from 3:30am - 5am China time. I can't believe he put up with us.
Shanghai:
-Good to be home: new antiques all in place, little Manny loving life, Lucy is leaning against me as I type, and I love my wife.
-Can't wait to go watch the NBA finals tomorrow morning. "We are all Texans."
-Going to hang out at Bike and Friends for a bit tonight.
Good times. Good times.

Antiquing Shanghai Style
Antique Kitten
Yeah, that's normal...
Big Head
Piles and Piles.
Yeah, that's normal...
Big Head
Piles and Piles.
Went out to the antique warehouse in PuDong yesterday. It's pretty cool. Lots of old junk, piled from floor to ceiling. The mission was to outfit my little nook/office area with the right accouterments for serious taking care of business from home. We ended up getting four big items and four minor items for a tidy sub-500USD.
Favorite item - see picture #2, the statue of peasants holding banners and sickles while riding a missile. Very Dr Stranglove-ian to say the very least.

Moganshan
Had my old man our for a nice last week. We went out to MoGanShan where we did some biking and hiking. These are photos of our hike through the bamboo forests surrounding the guesthouse.
Anyone living in Shanghai who requires some outdoor time could do well worse than taking a weekend in the hills here. Truly worth the three hour drive.
Total cost for the weekend (lodgings for weekend, food from Carrefour, heady beer, drivers, Tsingdao beer, more local beer, Cool Ranch Doritos): 950rmb/person.

He's on a boat, yo.
Another from the Lugu Lake b/w Lomo series. This one happened thanks to Andrew and I getting lost while hiking. We ended up 2 hours in, pinned between the lake and a cliff facing a major back track through some shitty hiking when we stumbled across this guy and his buddies cutting down trees in the woods. They gave us a lift in their traditional "pig's trough" boat for 100 rmb and complained that we somehow ended up ripping them off. Whatever. Fun times, good shot. Shot this and the previous photo with the Diana F+ Lomo using their ISO100 b/w film.
